False accusations of domestic violence by alleged theif

California residents are likely aware that law enforcement takes reports of violent crime quite seriously. Domestic violence in particular can be a frightening situation for victims, and for police that respond to the scene. Often, police react by removing the person accused from the situation, and conduct an investigation after the fact. This method is used to ensure the immediate safety of potential victims, and prevent further incidents at the scene.

Being accused of domestic violence can be stressful. A person may think that even if no violent act was actually committed, an accusation is enough to seal one's fate in a courtroom. This is not the case. Recently, one California woman decided to take advantage of the quickness with which law enforcement responds to a victim's call for help.

Police say that the woman would cozy up to men, feigning a relationship with them, and after she had convinced them they were a couple, she would call police for help, making false accusations of domestic violence. Police would then come and arrest or remove the men from their homes, as they normally do in these situations. The woman would then use their absence as a way to rob their homes and steal their belongings. Fraud detectives are now trying to determine how many men accused of violence by the woman are actually victims of theft themselves.

It is important to remember that being accused of a crime is not proof of guilt. People who have been falsely accused of domestic violence have the right to defend themselves in a court of law. Many times, it can be helpful to seek the aid of an experienced attorney, who may be able to help those falsely accused bring the truth to light and clear their names.
